Keene Art Association Invitation to Membership

In the early autumn of 1958 a loose knit group of fine artists numbering fewer than a dozen, gathered on the town common in Keene to display their paintings and art work. The city of Keene provided wooden snow fencing around the Central Square and the artists hung their work on the reddish slats for all to see. The sun filtered through the turning Autumn leaves and a tradition painted itself into the town's history. They called the event that brought them together an Art Festival.

Fifty years later the fruits of that first humble gathering have multiplied into a thriving eager art organization called the Keene Art Association. Now a non-profit organization with about 150 members KAA revisits its Art Festival origins each year at a new site in Ashuelot River Park. It is fitting that the City and the Art Association have both grown with the times. Back in 1958 when the handful of artists gathered at Central Square the river park site was home to a cinderblock car wash. In 2006 there were over seventy artists exhibiting their work for visiting Labor Day guests and neighbors in a superbly landscaped flower garden setting.

The Keene Art Association is more than a one event organization. Members exhibit their work everyday on a year round basis at the Colony Mill in Keene. The Associations Outreach Program places members Art in the Connecticut River Bank, Keene City Hall, Ocean Bank, and Cheshire Medical Center in Keene and in the Ocean Bank and Town Library in Chesterfield. And proceeds from fund raising events are returned to the community in the form of scholarships awarded to local high school students about to pursue careers in Art.

In anticipation of the 50th Anniversary in 2008 the Keene Art Association is planning a grand tribute to the City and its people who helped get the organization started all those many years ago. Some of the programs and events will be more visible than others but all together they create a presence that will not go unnoticed.

In recognition of our 50th Anniversary individuals, companies and organizations, as well as artists, are welcome to become members of the Keene Art Association. As the oldest cultural organization in the Monadnock Region, we invite you to exercise your support and appreciation for Art. Join us in making 2008 an outstanding anniversary year for Art and Artists in the Monadnock Region.
