Artist Statement
Light. Luminosity. Color. Spirit. These are the qualities which suffuse the paintings of Mary Iselin.

Mary Iselin is a professional artist whose paintings in oil are luminous and filled with light. She sees the horse as a bridge connecting spirit with everyday reality. The sheep and lambs which become her models are chosen for the ability of their fleece to “take the light.” And her landscape motifs are selected for their special qualities of light, color, and atmosphere. “I paint horses the way some artists would paint a bowl of fruit: as a vehicle to explore light, color, atmosphere, and, most of all, spirit.”

Mary’s current series focuses upon Silver Horses in various costumes, galloping under stars, through snow- filled forests, and along the ocean shore. She is also known for her paintings of more traditional equine activities, such as ploughing, sugaring, and fox hunting. Having spent nearly thirty years breeding sheep, and believing in the old dictum, “Paint what you know, paint what you love,” Mary frequently uses members of her flock to explore light and color, and each spring, she awaits the birth of her new “models,” so that she can begin work on a fresh series of “ baby lamb “ paintings. These special collectors’ item paintings have become a hallmark of her work.

Mary’s art has been featured on Rural Heritage TV, and can be found in many collections, both public and private, across North America. She has won numerous awards, exhibits both locally and nationally, and is represented by, among others, the Sharon Art Gallery in Peterborough, NH, where she is also a faculty member.
