The Keene Art Association began in 1958 when a loose knit group of artists displayed their art work on Central Square in Keene. The City provided snow fencing upon which the paintings were hung. That humble seed blossomed into last years Art in the Park event with over seventy five artists displaying their work. The Keene Art Association was legally structured as a non profit organization in 1963.

Today, it is a non-profit organization with a strong community/family commitment and orientation. Activities center on generating interest and appreciation of art within ourregion primarily through the exhibition of art works. Members exhibit in bi-monthly shows at the Colony Mill Marketplace and at various locations around the city involved in our Artists Outreach Program.

Activities for our members include speakers, demonstrations, workshops, plein-air painting groups, and a quarterly newsletter. Our main event of the year is "Art in the Park", a one day public outdoor art show in the lovely garden walkways of Ashuelot River Park on West Street in Keene. This is a juried exhibition held on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend. Artists come from all over New England to exhibit and sell their work.

Other highlights include the promotion of high school artists. Students from Keene High School and Monadnock Regional High School show their work in February and March at the Colony Mill Marketplace and also at Art in the Park. Scholarships are given to a graduating senior from those two schools who plans to pursue art studies in college.

Membership is open to all adults, 18 or older interested in the promotion of art in our community. Non-artist supporting members are also welcome at the same annual dues rate of $25.00. There is no residence requirement to become a member. Participating artists work in a wide variety of media and subject matter including photography and sculpture. The association does not require that artists offer their works for sale, although they may do so if they wish.

We are supported by donations and minimal fees for some exhibits, classes, and programs. The proceeds are used to help fund art related projects for our members, community, and scholarships. For further information write to: The Keene Art Association P.O. Box 864 Keene, N H 03431
