Norma Safford

This gallery is dedicatate to Norma Safford, a woman whose reputation as an artist and teacher lives on. She is especially well remembered by the Keene Art Association.

Ms Safford was the chairman of the Keene High School Art department as well as a beloved art teacher there. So much so that upon her retiring from teaching in 1969, the senior class dedicated the yearbook to her, "There are few teachers who constantly exert an influence upon us. Many teachers contribute much of their time and effort at some point along the way, but you are one of the few who never ceases to work with us. Even though you may not be directly connected with our projects, you always respond, when called upon, with ideas, advice and assistance, but never take the credit."

Upon retiring Norma became very active and supportive of the Keene Art Association (K.A.A.). This year will mark the 49th Anniversary of "Art in the Park" which was Norma's idea. Another dream of Norma's was having a gallery for the members of the K.A.A. She was instrumental in forming the relationship the Colony Mill Marketplace and K.A.A. through her former student and Colony Mill founder Emile J. Legere. so that members can display their work there, this virtual space is the result of Norma Safford's generosity and support of fellow artists.

Norma was a native of Keene, N.H. and graduated from Syracuse University. Her work is in a variety of mediums including oils, watercolor, and acrylics. Her love of nature is seen in her paintings. Safford's work is on display at Cheshire Hospital and Keene State College.
