Minutes

Keene Art Association Minutes March 10, 2007

Present: Bob Askey, Alicia Drakiotes, Hannah Carpenter, Sue Doyle, Barbara Busenbark, Connie Aron, Patsy DiBernardo, Carolyn MacDonald, Liz Winchester-Larson, Michael Robie, Ed Kingsbury, Barbara Morressy, Melissa Mack

President Bob Askey opened the meeting at 10:10 AM the Colony Mill, Keene, NH. We began with introductions all around. KAA Administration lists were passed out.

Membership: Bob Askey praised the editors of the new Keene Art Association Newsletter, Barbara Busenbark and Ed Kingsbury. Membership increased by 17 after their first edition. Membership now totals 131. We were all given new membership lists. Bob has been thinking of initiating student rates for art students to encourage them to join the KAA.

Secretary's Report: The minutes of Feb. 10,2007 were accepted as presented.

Treasurer's Report: Patsy's report that we have $6,346.89 in our account was received later to be included in the minutes.

Discussions: l. Insurance - We need blanket coverage for liability when we use places like Heberton Hall to exhibit our paintings. We will check how other non-profits handle insurance before we make a decision. 2. Meeting times - Some members think an evening meeting time would be more convenient. Now that the weather is better and days are longer we decided to discuss an alternate time at our next meeting. 3. Logo Contest - Bob has included the KSC art students in the contest to design a new logo for the KAA. Bob will keep us informed on possibly partnering with KSC on some events. 4. 50th Anniversary- We discussed having a big party to celebrate our 50th which we will celebrate in 2007 and 2008. We decided to have the party to kick-off our anniversary in 2007. A second idea by Alicia is to have paint-outs along the foot-paths and at Stonewall Farm. Alicia will look into this. 5. Media- The talents of local College and High School media students could be used to record our celebrations. Involving the community is one of our goals.

Newsletter: Bob would like to encourage non-artists to join the KAA. Articles on "Why You Like to Support the Arts" was suggested.. Concern was expressed about tom copies of the newsletter received in the mail. Heavier stock may be a solution. Newsletter Committee will set their own policies covering such things as the cost of underwriting an edition. Sponsors can be mentioned in a special section.

Publicity: Scott Chase produced a form for requesting special events publicity which was handed out.

Art in the Park: Melissa is planning a meeting with her committee.

Colony Mill: Alicia reminded us that the art drop-off time for the KAA Annual Juried Show at the Colony Mill is Tuesday, May 1,5-7 PM. The art will be juried on Saturday, May 5, and the reception will be held on Sunday, May 6, 2-4 PM in the food court.

Exhibits: Hannah Carpenter will join Carolyn on this committee.

Fundraising: Let Ed know if you can help with raffies, writing thank-you notes, etc.

Bob asked us to e-mail him any suggestions before our next meeting. The meeting was adjourned at 11 :35 AM. Next meeting is Saturday, April 28, 2007 at 10 AM at the Colony Mill.

Respectfully submitted, Barbara Morressy, Recording Secretary, Keene Art Association

Keene Art Association Minutes Feb.10, 2007

Present: Bob Askey, Edward Kingsbury, Barbara Busenbark, Liz Winchester-Larson, Scott Chase, ,Carolyn MacDonald, Barbara Morressy, Connie Aron, Patsy DiBernardo, Alicia Drakiotes

President Bob Askey opened the meeting at 10:10 AM at the Colony Mill in Keene, NH.  A list of those who will help administer the organization was handed out.

Minutes:  The minutes from the Holiday meeting on Jan. 20, 2007 were reviewed by Bob and accepted.

Newsletter: Barbara Busenbark and Ed Kingsbury III are the new co-chairs of the Newsletter. A draft of the first edition was circulated and all agreed they did a terrific job. They are aiming to possibly publish monthly and Barbara B. hopes members will submit articles (e.g.-on favorite Art Teachers, etc.) Ed will look for sponsorship from businesses to help underwrite the cost of printing and mailing. Liz suggested that our "events" could also be posted on the "Chamber of Commerce" web-site.
Fund-raising: Art in the Park: Bob announced that this will be a two day event to celebrate 50 years of KAA. It will include an art raffle, and 50% of the proceeds will go to the artist and 50% will go to the KAA. The raffle should help pay for the awards. The Art in the Park will see to getting a permit from the city to conduct this.

Membership: Bob will speak with Mayor Blastos to explore ways in which the city can help us celebrate the KAA anniversary and ways in which the city and KAA can work together. Bob is also interested in increasing  non-artist membership.

Events: The Events Chair replaces the Hospitality chair. Bob asked us to suggest other members that we think might be willing to head or to help on this important committee.

Exhibits:  Bob will work with Carolyn on a possibility of a juried art show for the Historical Society Building in the Fall or next Spring. Other ideas are for a Spring show at KSC parking lot &/or at the Key Road parking lot.Alicia and Barbara B. talked about exhibiting in Peterborough Bagel Mill.

Publicity: Bob spoke about honoring past "Art in the Park "artists who have become distinguished alumni (so to speak) ex. John Traynor as part of our 50th celebration. Publicity chairman Scott and Bob will talk over publicity ideas like interviews. Other suggestions to publicize the KAA were a radio talk show and producing our own video tape of the Art in the Park celebration.

Education: Liz spoke about our outreach role to provide education. We have had artists speak at the Keene Public Library and at the Keene Recreation Center. The sessions must be free and open to the public. To keep our non-profit status we cannot give an honorarium of more than $600. Our finances only allow around $100 so that limit has not been a problem.

New Business: Art in the Park: Discussion on Art in the Park continued with hopes to have a "think tank" session generating more ideas for the celebration. Security will be present in the park for Saturday night between the two days of the celebration. Bob wants 2007 "Art in the Park" to be the kickoff and 2008 "Art in the Park" to be our celebration conclusion. The meeting ended at 11:35  AM. No other meeting date was set at the time. Later, Saturday, March 10, 2007 at 10AM at the Colony Mill was designated for our next meeting.
